About a year and a half ago, I was inspired to do a horror movie painting with a blue and green dichromatic color scheme. Having grown up watching old horror movies I've always wanted to do some art based on Universal's classic horror movie characters. Bela Lugosi as dracula seemed an easy choice, what with his iconic status and recognizability even to younger horror fans. I chose not a specific scene or publicity still from the movie but rather a pose and setting of my own creating that I feel sums up the essence of his character. I finally got around to finishing the painting earlier this summer. The response it received was quite positive and I had so much fun doing it I decided to do the whole repertoire of Universal Monsters...or at least the most iconic recognizable main monsters. Each monster would be done in a different dichromatic color scheme, each with an original pose and/or environment. There are basically 8 main monsters (if you don't count both versions of The Phantom) which in order of release are: The Phantom of the Opera, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon. So, here they are, the first three of the eight in no particular order: The Mummy, Dracula, and The Phantom of the Opera. Enjoy!
Next up, The Bride!
